In 1997, the United States Open returned to the Nation’s Capital and Congressional Country Club, located in Bethesda, Maryland. Ernie Els shot 4-under par to capture his second U.S. Open title, edging Colin Montgomerie by one shot. Tom Lehman was the only other golfer to finish under par. Congressional was also the first professional appearance in a U.S. Open for one Tiger Woods, who had won the Masters just a few months earlier.
