The New England Patriots kicked off their dynasty run in remarkable fashion, upsetting heavily favored St. Louis 20-17 in Super Bowl XXXVI at the Louisiana Superdome. The Rams had rallied to tie the game late but second-year quarterback Tom Brady methodically marched the Patriots down the field to set up Adam Vinatieri’s game-winning, 48-yard field goal as time expired.
The Rams outgained New England 427 to 267 in total yards but were undone by three turnovers. It was the Patriots’ first Super Bowl win and they would get two more in the ensuing three years.
Super Bowl XXXVI was the first post-9/11 Super Bowl; hence the patriotic logo theme. U2 gave a stunning halftime performance in tribute to the 9/11 victims.
