Quarterback Danny Wuerffel ran the Fun ‘N Gun offense to perfection en route to the Heisman Trophy. But the undefeated Gators dropped their season finale at top-ranked Florida State, seemingly ending any hopes of Florida’s first national title.
But the Gators received some help…first from Texas, who defeated Nebraska in the Big 12 title game. That enabled Florida to sneak into the Sugar Bowl for a rematch with the Seminoles. The Gators exacted revenge with a dominating, 52-20 win over FSU, winning their first of three national titles.
