Boris Becker and Steffi Graf made it a German sweep at the 1989 U.S. Open.
Becker defeated Ivan Lendl in four sets to win his first U.S. Open title. It was Lendl’s eighth consecutive appearance in the U.S. Open final. Graf outlasted Martina Navratilova in three sets in the women’s final, earning her second U.S. Open and ninth career Grand Slam trophy.
The 1989 tournament was also memorable for two Americans. John McEnroe teamed with Mark Woodforde to win the men’s doubles. It was McEnroe’s eighth and last U.S. Open title (singles and doubles). And the girls’ singles title was won by a 13-year-old named Jennifer Capriati.
