Jake “The Snake” Plummer and his Sun Devil teammates took Arizona State fans on a wild and memorable ride in 1996, winning a Pac-10 title and very nearly a national championship.

Along the way, the Sun Devils stunned top-ranked Nebraska, made Houdini-like rallies against both Los Angeles school and destroyed their hated rivals in Tucson. The win over the Wildcats completed an 11-0 regular season and earned ASU its second trip to the Rose Bowl. There the second-ranked Sun Devils suffered a heartbreaking, 20-17 loss to fourth-ranked Ohio State, knocking them out of the national title picture. Plummer finished third in the Heisman Trophy balloting, cementing his legend status in the Valley. But Plummer was just one of eight Sun Devils selected in the ensuing NFL Draft, six of whom are on the front or back cover of the media guide.

(It’s also hard to look at this media guide without hearing the screeching sound of dial-up internet…)
