It’s one day until football season which — for many Tar Heel fans — means it’s less than three months until basketball season!

Carolina is a basketball school for a reason but entering the 2005 season Tar Heel fans were getting impatient. Roy Williams was in his second season replacing Matt Doherty and UNC hadn’t advanced past the second round of the NCAA Tournament since Bill Guthridge’s 2000 Final Four run.

All that changed behind a veteran Tar Heel squad led by Raymond Felton, Rashad McCants and Sean May. Carolina won the ACC regular season title — capping it with a pulsating comeback win over Duke in the Smith Center — and earned the top seed in the East Regional.

After surviving a scare from Villanova in the Sweet 16, the Tar Heels ran roughshod through three Big Ten squads — Wisconsin, Michigan State and Illinois — to claim the program’s fourth NCAA championship. It was also Williams’ first title in his fifth Final Four appearance. Order was restored in Chapel Hill.
