The expansion New Orleans Saints couldn’t have gotten off to a better start.
Rookie John Gilliam returned the kickoff of their season opener at Tulane Stadium 94 yards for a touchdown. But the Saints would lose that game to the Rams and wouldn’t pick up their first win until November, when New Orleans defeated the Eagles 31-24.
The Saints managed to finish their inaugural campaign 3-11, including a win at Washington in the season finale. Former Packers running back Jim Taylor led the team in rushing, while cornerback Dave Whitshell led the league with 10 interceptions, returning two for touchdowns.
