Both the Michigan Wolverines and Alabama Crimson had disappointing seasons — by their lofty standards — in 1987 but it resulted in a dream matchup for the Hall of Fame Bowl in Tampa.

Michigan opened the season with a loss to Notre Dame and then lost three conference games to finish 7-4. Alabama, which played all of its home games at Legion Field in Birmingham, also posted a 7-4 record after getting shut out by Auburn in the Iron Bowl.

Behind running back Jamie Morris’ 234 yards, the Wolverines rallied to win the Hall of Fame Bowl 28-24. The game later changed its name to the Outback Bowl.
