Two of the NFL’s oldest franchises kick off this season’s Monday Night Football slate tonight in the Maryland suburbs as the Washington Redskins face the Pittsburgh Steelers.
From 1937 to 1960 the Redskins played in the heart of the District at Griffith Stadium. The 1940 edition of the Redskins won their first seven games under Ray Flaherty, the last a 37-10 win over the Steelers. (When programs were 10 cents…)
Washington finished with a 9-2 record to win the NFL Eastern Division and advance to the NFL Championship against the Chicago Bears. The result? A 73-0 loss to the Bears. The Redskins had only yielded 126 total points during the regular season.
