The Chicago Cubs currently own the best record in baseball and have already clinched a postseason berth. But the question remains…will they finally win the National League and return to the World Series for the first time since (gulp) 1945?

The closest the Cubs have come to the Fall Classic since then was in 2003. After winning the NL Central in Dusty Baker’s first season as manager and defeating the Braves in the divisional round, the Cubs jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the NLCS against the Marlins. Florida won Game 5 in Miami but Chicago returned to Wrigley Field with two more chances to clinch. The Cubs had a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning of Game 6 but the Marlins scored eight runs in that frame. Chicago sent ace Kerry Wood to the mound for Game 7 but Florida won 9-6 to take the pennant.
