The Redskins‘ 2002 media guide cover was a nod to their glorious past in honor of the team’s 70th anniversary. But the 2002 season itself was a gamble on the future as Washington hired Steve Spurrier as head coach.

Spurrier, a college coaching (and playing) legend at the University of Florida, went 7-9 in his first season in the NFL — losing five of six division games. He was gone a year later.

The 2002 season was also the last for Redskins cornerback Darrell Green, who played 20 seasons with the club and won two Super Bowl rings.
